Production[]

Production commenced on September 15, 2008 and ended on January 9, 2009. Episodes were taped on Stage 11 at NBC Studios in Burbank, California.

Opening sequence[]

The opening sequence (which slides in from the top of the screen at the end of the teaser scene) begins with a shot of a ringing telephone, which Sonny picks up. After presumably getting the call from Hollywood to appear on So Random!, she screams into the phone, drops it and quickly packs a suitcase. The background suddenly changes from Sonny's bedroom to an airplane headed to California (though this portion contradicts a statement in the pilot episode by Sonny's mother Connie that they drove from Wisconsin to California). It continues by showing Sonny in L.A., then showing shots of the other characters (Tawni, who is polishing a star with her picture on it; Chad looking out the window of limousine; Grady and Nico waving and goofing around; and Zora atop a mechanical monster machine). Next, the entire cast walks toward the camera, then stops and poses. Finally, the logo appears, and Sonny walks over to it in time to give it an elbow-bump just as the theme song concludes with a "Yow!"

Sonny Munroe enters the set, not knowing that she is in for a difficult time with Tawni Hart. When Sonny changes Tawni's "Queen Bee" sketch, Tawni becomes jealous; the situation does not improve when Sonny and Tawni have to share a dressing room. Sonny's mother advises her to talk to Tawni. Things get worse when Sonny tries to help Tawni, as she accidentally shreds Tawni's favorite stuffed animal. Then, when Tawni talks to Marshall, Sonny decides she doesn't care what Tawni thinks anymore and makes the One Bad Bee sketch to get back at her.

So Random! sketches:

"Dolphin Boy": Grady plays the main character, "Dolphin Boy", who is half-dolphin and half-boy. Nico plays Dolphin Boy's friend and Tawni plays a cheerleader whom Grady wants to ask out. The sketch's tagline is "Who da mammal?"
"One Bad Bee": Sonny writes this sketch, which is entirely rapped with Zora as the DJ. Sonny plays the main rapping bee. All the cast but Tawni are backup bees.
"'Bumbling Bee": Sonny writes this sketch that takes the place of Tawni's sketch; it features flowers and a woman with a big butt.

2 2 "West Coast Story" David Trainer Michael Feldman & Steve Marmel August 8, 2009 (2009-02-08) 104
Sonny meets Chad Dylan Cooper, the star of Mackenzie Falls, and is starstruck until she realizes that Mackenzie Falls and So Random! are rivals. This apparently stems from a Tween Choice Award Mackenzie Falls won two years ago, when Chad mocked So Random! in his acceptance speech. Sonny decides to hold a peace picnic to dissolve the rivalry, but her plan backfires, resulting in the entire So Random! cast being stuck to their seats. In Grady's attempts to free himself, he rips his pants, after which video of the incident is posted to the internet. Sonny laughs it off until she realizes that video of her getting egg salad tossed in her face is also on the internet. Angry, Sonny challenges Chad to a musical chairs competition. The stakes are as follows: If So Random! loses, the show will say something nice about Mackenzie Falls; if they win, Mackenzie Falls must say something good about So Random!. In the end, Sonny tricks Chad with a fake injury, winning the game of musical chairs. Chad compliments her on her acting skills and asks her to join his show (offering to have Portlyn disappear in a ballooning accident), but she declines the offer. As his part of the agreement, Chad later says, on camera, that So Random! is his favorite show.

Note: A clip of Sonny and Chad in this episode is later used against them in "Sonny: So Far". Supposedly someone on Mackenzie Falls taped it and sent it to the talk show that Sonny and Chad guest starred on to humiliate Sonny, and possibly Chad.

So Random! sketches:

"Fasty's Really Fast Food": A restaurant-based sketch where the food items ordered and mentioned are thrown abruptly at the customers. Sonny and Tawni play customers, Grady plays fast food worker, and Nico plays the manager.
"Madge the Waitress": Sonny dresses up as a fat waitress with a Brooklyn accent who takes people's orders. Tawni mocks Sonny's outfit, asking her, "You're in a fat suit?"

First appearance: Sterling Knight as Chad Dylan Cooper
Guest Starring: Jillian Murray as Portlyn

3 3 "Sonny at The Falls" Eric Dean Seaton Phil Baker & Drew Vaupen August 15, 2009 (2009-02-15) 112
The cast members of So Random! get jealous when they're served bad cafeteria food while Mackenzie Falls cast members are dining on lobster and steak; this is because Mackenzie Falls is the lunch lady's favorite show. After hearing that So Random! has become more popular with Sonny as a cast member, Chad devises a plan to steal Sonny from them so that Mackenzie Falls can become popular. Things take a turn for the worse when Sonny gets her sketch rejected by her castmates, and her fellow co-stars hurt Sonny's feelings so much that she quits So Random! and joins the cast of Mackenzie Falls for comfort and support. In order to get Sonny back, the So Random! cast dresses up as characters from Sonny's rejected sketch. Sonny is so touched (and angry at Chad's admission that he was using her for ratings) that she joins the So Random! cast again. The cast is later seen doing "Loser Force Five" as an apology to Sonny.

So Random! sketch:

"Loser Force Four": Sonny wrote this sketch about four pathetic superheroes, but it was rejected by the others, though they later agree to do it as "Loser Force Five" in order to get Sonny back on So Random!

Sonny is the only cast member who hasn't been getting any fan mail. Tawni rubs it in Sonny's face every chance she gets, but Sonny pretends she doesn't care. Finally, sick of Tawni's bragging, Sonny writes herself her own fan letter using the name "Eric," but when Marshall invites Eric to meet Sonny, she has to pretend to be him to hide her lie. Sonny dresses up as Eric, with a fake beard, a hoodie, and two broken arms. Tawni pulls "Eric" into her dressing room as Josh, the mail man, walks in and hands Tawni some of Sonny's fanmail. Tawni stuffs it under her seat cushion, and it turns out she had been hiding fanmail from Sonny all along. Sonny, upset, pulls off her disguise to yell at Tawni. When Tawni finds out that Sonny is pretending to be her own fan, she suggests to Marshall that Sonny should meet Eric on stage after the live So Random! taping. Chad also finds out that Sonny is Weird Beard (Chad and Josh's nickname for Eric) and decides to help Sonny out by dressing up as Eric, showing that he cares about her. Meanwhile, Nico and Grady try and intercept a package meant for Zora, but she manages to get the last laugh.

So Random! sketches:

"So You Think You Can PP Dance?": A parody of the reality show So You Think You Can Dance?, featuring contestants dancing while needing to pee, which is made even harder by the fact that the announcer repeatedly makes double entendres related to peeing. Sonny plays the announcer while the other castmates play the contestants.
"Baby Waa Waa": This sketch is not seen, but parts of it are mentioned. It is said that it involves Sonny spitting up on the changing table while getting her diaper changed. Her catch phrase is "Waa waa waa." She is seen wearing a bonnet, carrying a giant baby bottle and (not seen) wearing a diaper.

Guest Starring: Michael Kostroff as Marshall, Brent Tarnol as Josh
Title Reference: You've Got Mail
Other References: Sonny, dressed as Eric, paraphrases a line from the song "Blackbird" by The Beatles when she says "Time to take these broken wings and fly."

But when Sonny's mother, Connie, finds out about her 'D' in geometry, she threatens to pull Sonny from the show unless she passes a major test to prove that she can pull her grade up. Tawni tells Sonny to cheat but she refuses; instead, she recruits Zora to help her, but is too preoccupied with the "Check It Out Girls" to pay attention. Zora finally gives up, and Sonny ends up writing the answers on her hand. However, when she is about to take the test, she repeatedly mishears words as "cheat" or "cheating", so she confesses. Marshall then bans Sonny and Tawni from the Check-It-Out girls sketch (because Sonny almost cheated and Tawni told Sonny to cheat) until they retake and pass the test without cheating. Meanwhile, Nico and Grady buy a snake to impress a pretty girl on the set, but chaos abounds when the snake escapes. At the end, Nico decides to just talk to the girl, but is horrified to discover that she has a manly voice.

Chad breaks open Sonny's door and accidentally damages it when he heard a phone call from Sonny (this happened when her phone went down the drain). Then, Sonny gets back in and Tawni tells Hayden the truth. In the end, Nico, Grady, Hayden, and Chad all end up retching because they ate the sandwich Nico and Grady accidentally left out in the sun for 12 hours. Then Sonny's new blarmie end up with a gross sandwich that Tawni retched on when it showed up in the mail at Sonny's apartment.

Nico and Grady both get so mad that they declare that they are "Not friends anymore", and both try to hang out with Sonny instead. Sonny gets annoyed with them not being friends and trying to replace each other with her. Meanwhile, Zora pretends to be upset and convinces Tawni to take her to see 'Giraffes on Ice' which Tawni figures out is an Animal Morgue. She later tricks Chad to take her also. Sonny finally decides to make Nico and Grady miss each other by taking them to movies that they don't want to see (Grady to "Five Weddings and a Wedding", and Nico to "Sisterhood of the Traveling Secret Princesses") instead of Monkey Cars 3D, the movie they both wanted to see. While watching their movies, they each realize that they miss each other, make up and go to Monkey Cars 3D where the whole cast of So Random! and Chad is seen watching "Monkey Cars 3D". Zora gets challenged by the studio head's daughter, Dakota, to sell the most Blossom Scout cookies ever, and Sonny steps in to help Zora win. However, Chad helps Dakota sell more cookies as she threatens him to get her dad to close down Mackenzie Falls. It turns out that the scout master is Sonny's old Scout Master from Wisconsin, which gets Sonny scared because of memories of being rejected. Both of the teams try to sell the cookies by bribing the customers. At one stage Zora gets kicked out of the Blossom Scouts but knows how to wrap up a twisted ankle when the Scout master's leg gets hurt. Then she is offered her badge sash again. In the end, they tie, but there is one box left. Sonny, Zora, and Dakota want it, but Chad eats it, and chokes. Sonny saves him, and she gets her merit badge that prohibited her from becoming a Blossom Scout ever since she was eight years old. Then, while trying to hold back Dakota and Zora, Sonny and Chad start arguing, which leads to them literally fighting with Zora holding Sonny back and Dakota holding back Chad. Meanwhile, Nico and Grady come up with a scent to attract girls (which attracts a few too many), and Tawni promises not to look in the mirror for two days, which at first makes her slightly eccentric, then daunting, and then she looks like The Joker.

21 21 "Sonny So Far" Eric Dean Seaton Michael Feldman & Steve Marmel August 22, 2009 (2009-11-22) 121
When Sonny and Tawni are guests on "Gotcha with Gilroy Smith," they are excited at first. But then Gilroy shows them the promo, saying he hopes the girls will reveal something personal and embarrassing. To prevent this from happening, they make a pact backstage to have each other's back so that neither of them will get embarrassed. But Tawni then breaks the pact after Gilroy shows a backstage footage of her and Sonny making the pact. As the show continues, Sonny's mind wanders and she starts to think about Chad Dylan Cooper after Gilroy says, "Do they, Sonny? Do they really?" which is Chad's catchphrase. Sonny starts to think about the time when she danced with Chad for about 10 seconds at the prom ("Promises, Prom-misses"). Gilroy sees her expression, can tell she's thinking about a boy, and starts questioning her on some of the boys she associates with and her feelings toward them. When he brings up Chad Dylan Cooper, and when Sonny seems to be nervous about it, he brings Chad onto the show. Gilroy shows rare footage of Sonny and Chad from episode 2 ("West Coast Story"). Afterwards, Sonny pulls Chad backstage, completely unaware about the fact that Gilroy has a hidden camera backstage and he's showing it to the audience. Tawni, who remembers all the things Sonny has done for her and doesn't want Sonny to get embarrassed in front of everyone, turns off the screen right before Sonny and Chad tell each other how they really feel. We don't hear them say they like each other, but it is assumed that they do like each other, based on what they say before and after Tawni turns off the screen (and how they acted towards each other earlier in the season). Gilroy grabs the remote back and turns the T.V. back on. We see Sonny talking to Chad ("That was...so much easier to say than I thought it would be.") and then she walks away.

Guest Star: Eric Toms as Gilroy Smith
